Chapter 1 Themes
In Chapter 1 of the Great Gasby one of the main themes seen is the portaryal of the american dream. Nick moves into the city in order to seek out a new life, become successful, and chase after his hopes and ambitions while he gets his life in order. He starts fresh in order to grow and prosper and thinks by moving he will be able to straighten his life. In chapter one we also see life in the 1920's. As Nick spends time with Tom the lack of morality and continuously occuring corruption of the age is plainly seen. alchohol, adultury, and a sense of rebellion are all common, which give the readers insight to the type of living promoted at the time

What do you think the dreams are of some of the other characters in chapter one? Daisy and Tom have a lot of money, but do they seem happy for you? What about Gatsby? The first time we see him in the novel he is staring across the water wistfully reaching towards a green light. Pay attention to what that light will come to symbolize.
After the first chapter, I don't have high hope's for Nick's "American Dream." To me, I see too much corruption getting in the way for him.
The corruption of the 1920s really is shown a lot during the first chapter. With everyone freely drinking and talking about Tom's mistress, it's obvious corruption is an important part of the book.
With all the action and corruption Nick is going to work really hard to reach his dream
I agree with Juliana's comment. in Chapter 1 I was really surprised about about how nonchalant everyone was at the mention of Tom's mistress. The fact that such a topic did not seem to make anyone even a bit uncomfortable is really saying something about the corruption of the time.
I think the American Dream has to include all the corruption, to see if Nick can overcome it.
I agree with Juliana also and Ms. Watkins's comment on Daisy and Tom's happiness although they have a large amount of money.
